Through Water

Wireless data from below the surface

CSignum's EM-2 carries sensor data up through the water column and across the water–air boundary — the missing link that acoustic, optical and cabled systems are unable to cross. Fresh or salt, murky or calm.

How it works

Bidirectional data from riverbed or seabed to shore

Patented Electromagnetic Field Signalling propagates low-frequency fields through fresh and salt water alike — and, crucially, straight through the splash zone and the water surface that stop everything else. Performance is unaffected by turbidity, biofouling or ambient noise, so a submerged sensor holds a continuous, two-way link to a topside gateway up to 100m away: no cables to snag, no surface buoy to maintain, and no adverse effect on marine life. Because the link is bidirectional, you can command devices below the surface, not just read from them.

The advantage

Data where nothing else gets through

Unaffected by harsh conditions

EMFS shrugs off turbidity, biofouling and ambient noise — reliable in shallow, sediment-laden and choppy water where optical and acoustic systems degrade.

Crosses the splash zone

Low-frequency fields pass cleanly through the water–air boundary — the exact zone that defeats acoustic systems and where near-surface cables fail.

Fresh or salt, no cables

Reliable in both freshwater and seawater, with no connectors or cabling to corrode, snag or fail in the marine environment.

From the surface to the cloud

The data surfaces at a topside gateway

The instrument stays below, collecting data and sending it wirelessly to a receiving gateway. Because EMFS carries the signal up through the air and across the water–air boundary, that gateway sits above the surface — up to 100m from the submerged unit, wherever is convenient. From there it passes the data onward over cellular or satellite networks to the CSignum Cloud, or straight into a SCADA system. With only the sensor in the water and no surface buoy tethered to it, the gateway can be sited discreetly and securely.

  • Placed above the surface Sits topside, up to 100m from the submerged unit — no buoy, no cable back to the sensor.
  • Onward over cellular or satellite Backhauls the data over cellular or SATCOM links to the CSignum Cloud or your SCADA system.
  • Discreet and secure Site it out of reach — hidden from tampering and vandalism, and clear of flood damage.
