Through Ground

Wireless data through the ground

The same low-frequency fields that cross water also cross soil, rock and sand — carrying data from buried instruments straight to the surface, with no trench to every sensor.

How it works

From buried sensor to the surface

Electromagnetic Field Signalling doesn't stop at the waterline. The same low-frequency fields pass through soil, rock, sand — even concrete and buried structures — so instruments on a construction site, beneath a capped landfill or inside a storm drain can send their readings up to a surface gateway wirelessly. There's no cable run to each buried sensor — a major cost and disruption on a live site — and no dig to recover the data. The real power is combining underground and underwater in one technology: a single network can span a riverbed sensor and a buried storm-drain monitor alike.

The advantage

Reaching the sensors radio can’t

Crosses soil, rock & sand

The signal travels through the ground itself — even through concrete and buried structures — reaching instruments that surface radio and GPS can't.

No trenching

Skip the cable run to every buried sensor, along with the cost and disruption of trenching across a live site.

Keeps reporting once capped

At landfills, buried gas, leachate and groundwater monitors keep sending data even as the site is capped and reprofiled.

From the surface to the cloud

The data surfaces at a topside gateway

The instrument stays below, collecting data and sending it wirelessly to a receiving gateway. Because EMFS carries the signal up through the air and across the water–air boundary, that gateway sits above the surface — up to 100m from the submerged unit, wherever is convenient. From there it passes the data onward over cellular or satellite networks to the CSignum Cloud, or straight into a SCADA system. With only the sensor in the water and no surface buoy tethered to it, the gateway can be sited discreetly and securely.

  • Placed above the surface Sits topside, up to 100m from the submerged unit — no buoy, no cable back to the sensor.
  • Onward over cellular or satellite Backhauls the data over cellular or SATCOM links to the CSignum Cloud or your SCADA system.
  • Discreet and secure Site it out of reach — hidden from tampering and vandalism, and clear of flood damage.
